Local School Nature Grants

What do bird boxes, bee hotels, insect DNA testing kits, and nature experts all have in common? They’re all available for free to schools as part of Learning through Landscapes’ Local School Nature Grants scheme.

Supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, this Partnership Award Programme gives schools and early year settings across England, Scotland and Wales access to £500 of outdoor learning equipment as well as 2 hours of free, expert-led training for up to 30 staff.

Since their launch in 2017, Local School Nature Grants have helped over 2,500 schools to improve their outdoor learning provision, enabling thousands more children to profit from time in nature.

Last year saw their biggest year yet: the scheme awarded 900 grants, trained over 16,000 teachers, educators and support staff, and received more than 3,700 applications. An approximate 147,000 children will benefit from improved outdoor learning provision as a result of 2022’s Local School Nature Grants.

“As a school with no green space, we are always keen to take any opportunity to improve our outdoor learning provision. Our trainer gave us practical ideas for teaching science, literacy and numeracy outdoors.”
